How to hand wash your delicate or handmade clothing items

All Dreamers & Drifters garments are handmade with love in an ethical sewing room in Bali, and so they need to be washed and handled with care; for this we recommend hand washing.

This is because hand washing is the gentlest way to wash your clothing items, meaning you will increase their longevity by preserving the fibres and textile detailing.

Therefore, we would always recommend hand washing delicate items, handmade items, wool, silk or linen items.

How to hand wash your clothes

It’s always important to read the label and check for specific hand washing instructions first, such as recommended water temperature, as care instructions will vary depending on the type of fabric or printing method used etc.

But as a general guide, the best way to hand wash your clothes is to follow these basic steps…

Step 1: Fill a sink or tub with cool-warm water. Avoid washing in hot water as this can lead to shrinkage of your garments.

Step 2: Add in 1 teaspoon of laundry detergent or soap and mix to prepare the bath. Submerge your garments, gently moving them about to soak up the soapy water and leave for up to 30 minutes.

Step 3: Use tepid or cold water to thoroughly rinse your garments until all the soap has gone. Carefully press your garments against the sink to get rid of excess water. Never wring or twist!

Step 4: Lay your garments out flat in their original shape on top of a towel, then roll up the towel to remove as much water as possible. Unroll and leave to dry.

Hand washing do’s and don’ts

  • Do use tepid/room temperature or cool water to hand wash your garments.
  • Don’t use hot water to hand wash your garments.
  • Don’t hand wash different colours together.
  • Don’t hand wash garments made from completely different fibre contents together.
  • Don’t wring or twist your garments to remove excess water.
  • Do flat dry your garments in their original shape after hand washing.

How to remove stains when hand washing your clothes

Always treat your fabric stains before hand washing with either a Sard Wonder Soap bar or a homemade paste of laundry detergent and some bicarbonate of soda.

Gently rub your chosen solution on the stain and let it sit for 5 minutes (no longer than 5 minutes). You can either proceed to hand washing now or continue treating if your stain is really bad.

Place your garment into a bucket of warm water with laundry detergent and a drop of bleach and leave for 10 minutes or so. Rinse out the bleach and rub the stain again with your laundry detergent.

Then hand wash as normal and leave to flat dry.

Remember that certain fabrics, such as linen, will require a little bit of extra attention. Read our full guide to caring for your linen clothing here.
